Director

Institute

Applications are
invited for this permanent full-time post, for appointment at professorial
level on the establishment of the University of Cape Town (UCT).

The IIDMM, one of the
largest and most productive research institutes at UCT, has been in operation
for the past five years. It derives its more than 20 members (heads of research
groups) from seven University departments and is located administratively in
the Faculty of Health Sciences. The IIDMM is an internationally competitive
centre of excellence in which world-class scientists, using state-of-the-art
facilities, work together to combat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and
tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases and genetic disorders. Common to all
areas is the research approach – that of discovery, development and translation
– whereby research is used to develop novel strategies for the prevention,
detection and treatment of diseases. The research is therefore pertinent and
relevant to the needs of Africa and the Institute understands the importance of
building indigenous scientific capacity at the basic, clinical and public
health levels (see www.iidmm.uct.ac.za).

The criteria for
appointment to the Directorship will be international standing, outstanding
research leadership qualities, academic excellence and experience in the health
sciences. Appropriate institutional and financial management experience will be
essential. An active, well-funded, personal research programme pursued in one
or more of the focus areas of the Institute, is highly desirable. In addition,
the successful applicant will be required to forge regional and continental
research networks, and contribute to transformation.
