African Society of Human Genetics

Information 2005

Meeting location: All scientific sessions, exhibits and posters will be held at Glenburn Lodge Country Estate, Muldersdrift, Gauteng.

Venue: Glenburn Lodge is situated in the prestigious "Cradle of Humankind" in the peaceful Sterkfontein rural valley. Declared as a World Heritage site in 2000 it is now renowned as the world's richest hominid site.

It is here at the Sterkfontein site that Dr. Robert Broom in 1947 discovered the famous Mrs. Ples (Plesianthropus transvaalenis) who lived about two million years ago. The skull was believed to be that of a female but later research was conducted and she's now believed to be masculine (Mr. Ples). Later the well-preserved skeleton called Little Foot was discovered and work to have it excavated is planned to finish in 2005. More information can be found on http://www.joburg.org.za/

Transport: The venue is situated 30 minutes from Johannesburg and Pretoria and 45 minutes from Johannesburg International airport. Lanseria airport is situated 10 minutes from Glenburn. Daily flights are scheduled to both of the airports. More information will be available on the registration form. Transport will be organized on Sunday 13 March 2005 leaving from Johannesburg International Airport and returning on Wednesday 16 March 2005. Costs will depend on the amount of passengers and will be communicated later. Transport will be organized from Lanseria airport if necessary. Please indicate if you will need transport. Registration: The registration fee will be for the full conference or for day delegates only.

Scientific programme: This will include plenary sessions where international and local scientists will deliver lectures, oral presentations by delegates who submitted abstracts and as well as poster presentations on all aspects of Human and Medical Genetics.

Accommodation: Glenburn Lodge accommodates 100 single and 194 sharing delegates in chalets, hotel rooms and suites. There is excellent alterative accommodation in venues nearby if needed. More information on the venue can be found at www.glenburn.co.za.

CPD: The conference is accredited for CPD points.

Conference language: The conference language is English. No simultaneous translation into any other languages will be provided.

Exhibition and Poster Presentations: The presentations will be located in areas adjacent to the conference facility. More information will be provided during the conference.

Dress code: Informal.

Equipment: Presentations should be done in Powerpoint format. Overhead projector and slide projector facilities can be arranged if necessary.

Social program:

    1. Welcome reception and cocktail function on Sunday evening and all delegates registered are invited to join us.

    2. Excursion to the Sterkfontein caves: This will be organized for Monday evening for delegates interested to attend. This will be followed by an informal braai at the venue.

    3. Conference banquet: This event will take place on Tuesday evening. More information in the registration pack.

    4. There will be ample opportunity for accompanying persons to go on excursions to nearby game farms and cultural sites. The lodge also provides trout fishing and game viewing.

    5. Hot air ballooning: The lodge provides this excursion. More information will be provided on request.
