The AfSHG Prize was set-up within the framework of the
African Society for Human Genetics with the aim to promote young researchers in
the field of genetics in African populations or those of African ancestry.
The funds for the AfSHG Prize are provided by sponsorship
sought through the AfSHG. The prize is awarded at each AfSHG meeting for the
best oral or poster presentations given by a young scientist attending and
presenting their own work.
Conditions for participation in Prize competition
1. Participants in the AfSHG Prize competition
should have received, within the last three years prior to the application
deadline, a university degree (at undergraduate or postgraduate level) in
Biological, Medical, Pharmaceutical or Social/Behavioral Sciences and work in
the field of genetics relating to African populations. Individuals with no
formal degree but equivalent experience will be considered at the judges discretion.
2. Participants should indicate at the stage of
registering and submitting an abstract for an AfSHG meeting whether he/she
intends to take part in the Prize competition. The deadline for application for
the Prize competition is thus equivalent to the deadline for registration of each
AfSHG meeting.
3. The abstract should be written according to
the AfSHG abstract submission guidelines and structured into introduction,
materials & methods, results and discussion section.
4. Participants must additionally provide (i) a
short Curriculum vitae (no more than 2 A4 pages including publication list and
(ii) a letter of recommendation by their supervisor or line manager.
5. The Prize will be awarded by an ad-hoc Prize
Committee of experts in the field attending the AfSHG meeting and nominated by
the AfSHG Committee. The decision of the Prize Committee is definitive, and it
will report back to the AfSHG Committee.
6. The Prize will be presented to the awardee
on the occasion of the AfSHG meeting.
7. The AfSHG aims for the first Prize is to
cover funding for the winner to attend a subsequent AfSHG meeting or training
course, as well as funding runners-up prizes. However, the nature of the prizes
may change depending on availability of funds.
