AfSHG Prize
|

|
The
AfSHG Prize was set-up within the framework of the African Society for
Human Genetics in 2007 with the aim to promote young researchers in the
field of genetics in African populations or those of African ancestry.
The
funds for the AfSHG Prize are provided by sponsorship sought through
the AfSHG. The prize will be awarded at each annual AfSHG meeting for
the first, second and third best oral or poster presentation given by a
young scientist attending and presenting their own work.
Rules governing the award of the prize
- Participants in the AfSHG Prize competition should
have received, within the last three years previous to the application
deadline, a university degree (at undergraduate or postgraduate level) in Biological, Medical,
Pharmaceutical or Social/Behavioral Sciences, work in the field of
genetics relating to African populations. Individuals with no formal
degree but equivalent experience will be considered at the judges'
discretion.
- Participants should indicate at the stage of
registering for an AfSHG annual meeting whether he/she intends to take
part in the Prize competition. The deadline for application is thus
equivalent to the deadline for registration at AfSHG annual meetings.
- Participants are required to provide an abstract of
their oral or poster presentation following the guidelines of abstract
submission for AfSHG annual meetings. The abstract should be structured
into introduction, materials & methods, results and discussion
section.
- Participants must additionally provide (i) a short
Curriculum vitae (no more than 2 A4 pages including publication list
and (ii) a letter of recommendation by their supervisor or line manager.
- The Prize will be awarded by an ad-hoc Prize
Committee of five experts in the field attending the annual AfSHG
meeting and nominated by the AfSHG Committee. The decision of the Prize
Committee is definitive, and it will report back to the AfSHG Committee.
- The Prize will be presented to the awardee on the occasion of the annual AfSHG meeting.
- The prize will be awarded annually, with the aim
for the first Prize to cover funding for the winner to attend a
subsequent AfSHG annual meeting, as well as funding two runners-up
prizes. However, the nature of the prizes may change depending on
availability of funds.
The
deadline for AfSGH Prize competition this year is 25th August 2007.
Feedback for accepted abstracts will be provided by the Society by
September 15, 2007.
Please indicate your intention to participate when submitting your abstract.
Participants
in the Prize competition should send a short CV (maximum 3 A4 pages
including publications) and letter of recommendation by supervisor or
line manager by 30th September 2007.
